The Financial Aid Process
Financial Aid is the financial assistance that you may receive to help pay for college. This assistance be include federal, state funds, money from private sources or from the college that you attend.

Do not wait until until you have been accepted to a college to apply or search for financial aid.


Types of Financial Aid
  • Grants
  • »»Grants be come from the federal or state governments and the college that you may attend. They are based on the family's economic situation. Grants do not have to be repaid. They may be based on need and may not be available to all students.
  • Scholarships
  • »»Scholarships are awarded to students based on merit or ability. Some scholarships are automatically awarded by the college you attend. Most will require an application, essay or personal statement. Students will good grades, talents and abilities in specific areas will find many scholarships available. Please search our data base that is updated regularly.
  • Work - Study
  • »»A program for students to earn money through an on-campus job while in college. Work study is part of the student's financial aid process so there is usually a limit on the amount that can be earned under this program.
  • Loans
  • »»Money that is borrowed from the government, your colege, a lending institution or a bank to cover college expenses may be avilable. This money must be repaid. But loans are not something to be afraid of. As long as you plan right, loans can be an effective way to meet your costs. Just as people borrow money to pay for investments such as a car or a house, a college eduation is an investment where low-interest loans are available.

  • Oct. - Dec.

  • »Log on to Fastweb.com and create your profile. The service is free and you will be matched with scholarships locally and across the country.
    »Review the Typical Scholarships page to see when local scholarships are available and due. Use this is a guide to keep handy.
  • Jan.

  • »Log on to www.fafsa.ed.gov and begin the free application process.
    »You can also pick up a paper FAFS application in 092. You will need tax forms and documents to complete.
    »Review the Scholarship Database page to what area scholarships are available and due.
    Remember to ask for letters of recommendation early!
    »Review all scholarship options that the colleges you are interested in have available.
  • Feb. - March

  • »Complete FAFSA
    »Complete any College/University financial aid forms.
    »Review the Scholarships page to view all scholarships available.
  • April - May

  • »Receive Financial Aid package.
    »»Review Financial Aid package with parents and counselor. »Review the Scholarship Database page to what area scholarships are available and due.
